Website Refresh

My Role: UX Designer

Duration: May 2023 - 1 week

Responsibilities: Identified and addressed usability and accessibility gaps

Project Overview

Prompt

Redesign the landing page for Laurel Play Gardens daycare, improving the UI elements to enhance the user experience.

The Refresh

While the refresh to the website was subtle, I made improvements to the color, contrast, grid layout, and calls to action. I made these changes to help users find the information they need more easily while maintaining the daycare’s online identity.

1 Color & Contrast

Addressing the color palette of the website first, I ran each color through a web color accessibility checker. Three colors came back and had a low rating for contrast. To fix the contrast, I toned the green and purple. For the fourth color, I chose an orange from one of the website components. The colors that I chose now have high contrast and pass the accessibility test.

2 Grid Layout

Overlaying a simple column grid onto the live version of the website helped me to identify where elements should be placed on the refreshed version of the site. The columns also revealed the amount of space available to increase the size of elements such as the menu bar and logo.

The call-to-action buttons on the live site blended into the background, and the font size was too small to read. I updated the color of the call-to-action buttons to the orange I had selected earlier, so the buttons had high contrast both against the background and with the updated typeface.

3 Call to Action

Finally, I updated the hover states of the menu buttons and phone number. I wanted users to know where their mouse was pointing and that the phone number on the screen was clickable.
